If you were looking for the "wilmont" home page, you will be disappointed. There is no "n" in Wilmot.
Among other things (as you'll see below), Wilmot is the name of a stuffed animal. I inherited Wilmot from my friend Dave (the details are still fuzzy, but Dave apparently doesn't need Wilmot back, and it's been 16 years or so). Wilmot is red, and about the size of a slice of watermelon. Wilmot has two eyes, a purple nose, two black ears, and a tail. He has no mouth and no feet. His tail is missing from time to time (as it holds on via velcro), but currently is attached. Wilmot is often mistaken for a rat. Based on fuzzy memory and piecing together a few clues, we believe Wilmot may have originally been a prize from the Kenosha County Fair in Wilmot, Wisconsin, USA sometime in the early 1970's. If anyone has seen a creature like Wilmot (with or without tail) that came from a fair in a town somewhere "Back East", let me know.
Wilmot has been to Europe, Canada, and all around the US. I have made a couple clones of Wilmot, one of which visited Japan. He has had many adventures worth telling which I may put up on this home page, such as the time he was adopted by coyotes, or when he visited the hoodoos at Yoho. But mostly he's a fairly inert creature.
The Encyclopedia Britannica (15th Edition, copyright 1975) lists four references to Wilmot. They are "Frank Leslie Thompson Wilmot", "John Wilmot, 2nd earl of Rochester", "Wilmot Proviso", and "Wilmot River".

The Wilmot River is in north Tasmania, Australia.
Robert Wilmot, 1568-1608, was the author of "The Tragedie of Tancred and Gismund", a play based on Boccaccio and is the oldest English play of which the plot was taken from an Italian novel. Robert was the rector of North Ockendon in 1582 and of Horndon-on-the-Hill in 1585.
John Wilmot (1647-1680), was the Earl of Rochester. An English poet and courtier in the reign of Charles II.
David Wilmot wrote the Wilmot Proviso.
The Wilmot Proviso called for the exclusion of slavery from any territory acquired from Mexico, and is credited with leading to the secession of the South, thus starting the US Civil War. The Wilmot Proviso is also considered one of the causes of the Republican Party.
There is a book called "Struggle for Europe" written by someone named Wilmot. It's Dewey Decimal catalog number is 940.53.
Wilmot was the name of the three principal characters in Lillo's "The Fatal Curiosity"

Box 76, Cape Canaveral, FL 32920. The magazine has a very tiny circulation, but on that list are some of the most influential people on the planet. It deals with the politics of America as it dissolves into separate tribes, and as such, is pessimistic. I myself know next to nothing about Mr. Wilmot Robertson, but read his magazine. It is the only place, other than your website, that I have ever seen the name Wilmot without the "n." If you order a sample copy, you will quickly find that it is NOT politically correct; yet it makes interesting reading. Hope I have provided an extra lead. (9/17/99)

[Name removed by originator's request] informs us: The big cheese who runs the MCI Classic Golf Tournament (right after the Masters) on Hilton Head Island is Steve Wilmot. His company is called Classic Sports. He helped run the Family Circle Magazine Cup tennis tournament for many years, and I believe he either played or coached in the USFL. (8/17/99)
David Wilmot and Nick Bardoni both sent me information about their grandfather Charles Mandeville Wilmot (1904-1981). Charles apparently build the first model aircraft that actually flew! He founded a company called FROG (an acronym: First Rise Off Ground). He later sold this company to Lines Brothers, who eventually became Jetex and, later, Airfix (he was also involved with Wilmot Packaging Ltd, ConCargo and the Bouncing Bomb fame). Charles was a Gloucester man (two of his uncles, both Townends, played for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club). He was a scratch golfer and captain of his Club, Lyndhurst, in Hampshire. He was always certain he was a descendant of Rochester's (but, then, so do all Wilmots - maybe we all are...). (8/13/99)

Bob Wilmot has had some bad experiences with the letter "n" creeping into Wilmot: Just on a goof, I entered "Wilmot" as a search term on EBay, and look what came up! The most important Wilmot issue: Why so many non-Wilmots feel compelled to put that damn 'N' in there? I was even in the phone book for a year as Wilmont, and people I've known for years (even my father-in-law!) have DONE IT! I can show people my drivers license and they'll copy it down as Wilmont. Shana Wilmot has a lot of great information about Canadian Wilmots: It is interesting-I have never thought of looking up Wilmot on the internet. I am, of course, a Wilmot from Brantford, Ontario. My grandfather, Eardley Wilmot, was the Mayor of Bellville and there is Wilmot creek named after our family. One of my great great uncles was one of the fathers of Canada's confederation, while my great grandmother's research into the family tree in the early 20's traced us back to, yes, the Earl of Rochester, who's name was Eardley Wilmot. There was a castle in the Wilmot family in England outside Edinborough until the early 20's called Scalveny Castle. And we have a farm outside Brantford that has been in the family since 1820. Randie Bricker, a First grade teacher at Wilmot Elementary in Deerfield, Illinois writes about the school: We just celebrated our 150th birthday. The Wilmot family gave the land to build our school. Rick Wilmot writes: Wilmot notes from the UK which may be of interest. WILMOT CLOSE is a little road in north London just west of the St. Pancras and Islington Cemetry. I'm guessing that some of the road names in that area were taken from graves in the cemetry. My family's grave is in there containing three WILMOTS. (Apparently, there's room for one more on top.) My father is still alive and kicking at 91 years old.
There's another WILMOT CLOSE in Peckham, south London. WILMOT PLACE is off St. Pancras Way, Camden in north London. Another WILMOT PLACE is in Hanwell, west London. Then there's three WILMOT ROADS in London. One in Leyton, another in Wood Green and another in Carshalton, south London.

A description of the town of Wilmot, Wisconsin: I lived in Wilmot Wisconsin about five years ago and now live about two miles to the west in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin. We in this area also have experienced that many people add the "n" into the name. There are quite a few roads in the area called Wilmot Rd. - Wilmot Ave. etc. and when I lived in that town I also had the name "WILMOT" on my vanity license plate. It is a very small little town with a gas station, a few restaurants & antique stores, It has the High school for many surrounding towns, a grade school just for the Wilmot area and a few churches. Judy Lazar of Newark, CA reports: Founded in 1883, Wilmot Castle Co., of Rochester, NY, manufactures laboratory, medical, dental and hospital equipment, including various types of sterilizers, operating tables, and surgical and dental lights. Castle was a subsidiary of Sybron Corporation (formerly Ritter Pfaudler Corporation) and is now a division of a medical equipment corporation called MDT. No, I never worked for Wilmot Castle. But I'm aware of the company through being a medical, dental and podiatry patient, a veterinary client, a former bench microbiologist, and a reader of SCIENCE magazine in the 1960's and '70's, when Castle was one of their advertisers. (Their slogan was "Big ideas take great new shapes at Castle".) One of my studemts in undergraduate microbiology lab at the University of Colorado in the early '70's told me he had a buddy from Rochester who was a descendant of old Wilmot C. I've always liked the name Wilmot. As a student at the University of Colorado, I owned a four-foot, black and white mottled stuffed snake, purchased in the student union bookstore in the fall of my freshman year, whom I named Wilmot, in honor of Mr. Castle.I kept Wilmot until I finished my Ph.D. at Colorado, when I passed him on to my thesis advisor's kids. Wilmot W. Brown, Jr. was a biologist taking part in the Thayer Expeditions to Mexico and the southwestern U.S. in the first decade of the 20th century. He collected many birds, including Purple Martins, which are now housed as part of the Thayer Expedition collections at the Museum of Comparative Zoology (the Agassiz Museum) at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. Wilmot Creek, is I believe a tributary of the Oconee River in northern Georgia. It crosses Interstate 85 just south of hwy 129 (if you want to try to locate it on a map for confirmation). (Bob Hole 8/29/95)
Tom Battley from Rochester, NY reports that a Wilmot family lives in Rochester, and is one of the wealthiest families in the US. "They are the 18th largest owners of SHOPPING MALLS. I just read that they are worth roughly $660M. In the 1970's James Wilmot gave a silver plated cadillac to Idi Amin Dada" (29 July 1995...3/10/97 update: William Wellington Napier reports that the Cadillac was not silver plated)
